There are great little listening devices that are known as a Super Ear. It is small enough to clip to a shirt pocket and you can even be attached to your binoculars. Because of its small size, you can take it anywhere like on a camping trip or when you go hiking. These listening devices would be great on hiking trips.
If you are hiking with one or more persons, and you should never go hiking alone, should you happen to get separated from the other hikers, you could use these listening devices to help you locate the rest of your party from up to one hundred yards away.
