Readying Your Air-Conditioning System For A Hot Summer

Keeping your cool this year may be easier if you give your air-conditioning system a tune-up before the weather gets any warmer. All it takes is a few simple steps to make sure your air-conditioning system is ready to properly cool your home.

Here are some tips from the U.S. Department of Energy and the experts at Coleman® Heating and Air Conditioning, a brand of the Unitary Products Group of York--a Johnson Controls Company:

• Keeping the cool air inside is just as important as keeping the warm air outside. Caulking, weather stripping, and adding additional attic insulation will help keep cool air inside during the summer.

• Make sure the air is flowing properly through the vents. Inspect the ductwork for holes or separated joints, and hire a professional to repair them.

• Add insulation around air-conditioning ducts, when they are located in unconditioned spaces, such as attics, crawl spaces and garages; do the same for whole house fans where they open to the exterior or attic.

• Homeowners should check the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating of their air-conditioning unit. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit is and the lower your utility bills will be. Upgrading to a higher SEER rating can save homeowners hundreds of dollars a year on their energy bills.

If the air-conditioning unit needs to be replaced, homeowners should be aware of the U.S. Department of Energy legislation that requires all new, central air-conditioning units manufactured after January 23, 2006, to have a SEER of at least 13.

Consumers may want to consider an energy-efficient model, such as the Coleman Echelon™ 15+ SEER air conditioner. New models are Energy Star® qualified, use environmentally friendly refrigerant and have high-efficiency scroll compressors that enhance reliability and contribute to the extremely quiet operation of the units.

The Technology Behind a Plasma TV Screen

For many years, the technology that allowed you to sit in your home and watch audio and video was based on a tube technology. Very basically, light was shined into a tube which then projected the image onto the screen of your television set. The technology behind the plasma TV screen isn’t so very much different in some respects, but is very different in others.

First, keep in mind that plasma TV screens aren’t a new idea. Almost as long as people have had the power to watch television, there have been those with the idea for plasma television. It was during the 1960s that a college professor created the first plasma TV screen, though manufacturers weren’t anxious to pursue the technology until much more recently.

The technology is based on a series of very small lights. The lights are fluorescent and each pixel has three colors – red, green and blue. The lights are illuminated based on the code of the image being received so that the viewer sees a series of lights that form an image.

Plasma TVs have nothing to do with blood. In this case, plasma is a gas. The gas in its neutral state is stagnant. When electricity is introduced into the situation, these particles become active and light is released. The process is very fast, making it possible for pictures to be updated quickly so that you have the impression of a moving image when watching the television.

There are some other technologies that have been tried along the way. The liquid display screen works in a very similar manner and the result is a quality picture, though some argue that the plasma TV is the ultimate viewing experience.

One of the most beneficial points of the plasma TV is the fact that the layers needed to make this technology work are very thin, resulting in a television screen that is mere inches thick. Even for a very large screen, the thickness of the layers changes little, meaning the screens are easy to handle, mount and view.

There’s no doubt that technology will continue to develop as new people have better ideas for bringing audio and video into our homes. But when you see the crisp clear images of a plasma TV, it’s rather difficult to imagine how it could get any better than this.

Digital Video Recorder – Doing Good Work

The unbelievable advances that have taken place in the technological world over the past few decades are certainly a thing of wonder to behold. Most of us have already forgotten how we coped without the many technologically based gadgets we have come to take for granted, such as microwave ovens, personal computers and cell phones. And while these advances have enriched our personal lives for the better in many ways, it is not only our domestic lives that have improved as a result of these technological developments. In many different ways, technology has been used to make a variety of professional situations more efficient and effective. Not least of the many examples of this phenomenon is the use of digital video recorders by police departments and other security personnel.

There’s probably not a one among us that would deny that our police officers have a difficult job to do. With rising crime rates, it seems that they need eyes at the back of their heads in order to protect the communities they have sworn to serve. But thankfully, developments in technology have been successfully used to make their jobs a little easier, and to help keep us a great deal safer.

Digital video recorders are increasingly used in the stead of the their analog counterparts to monitor the goings on at all kinds of locations. From stores to police interview rooms, these devices are a more cost effective and efficient way to record the happenings in a variety of locations. With clearer, more detailed pictures, and the ability to record audio, digital video recorders are helping law enforcers more reliably identify and track down criminals.

There is a time honored question that asks who will police the police, and digital vide recorders are helping to address this important aspect of law enforcement also. To ensure the honorable behavior of its officers at all times, in 2003 the Yakima, Washington Police Department installed digital video recorders to allow them monitor the conduct of both officers and suspects. The success of this program has lead many other departments across the country to follow suit, helping to ensure that law enforcement is always carried out fairly.

Technology is undoubtedly a wonderful thing that enhances our lives in a multitude of ways. But it is possibly used to its very best advantage when it not only makes our lives easier, but helps keep us safer too.

Plasma TVs And Your Home Entertainment Center

It seems as if everyone these days is showing off their expensive flashy new home entertainment centers. They’re linked wirelessly to computers, have more speakers than a Rolling Stone’s concert, and cost more than a midsize luxury sedan. They feature DVD players, DVR or Tivo, CD players, MP3 players, and anything else you can imagine. The centerpiece, though, still remains the same: the television.

Plasma TVs have recently been introduced to the market. They are extremely flat television panels which make them very easy to mount on either a wall, in a cabinet or on other specially designed furniture. Plasma TVs are known for their wonderful quality and almost all plasma TVs come already equipped with an HDTV (high definition television) tuner which will allow you to watch all the HDTV channels that have been so widely discussed lately. The quality is amazingly realistic.

As mentioned before, the plasma TV is completely flat. It much more easily manipulated than conventional CRT TVs and won’t burn out like rear projection TVs and LCD TVs. Mounting the plasma TV on the wall and adding rows of seats to a home theater will surly add a commercial theater feel to any room. Along with some of the high end sound systems available on the market today, the difference between a well equipped home theater with a quality plasma TV and a commercial theater is hard to distinguish.

If mounting the plasma TV on the wall isn’t an option, try commissioning a carpenter to create a custom made cabinet. This may be a better option as it would allow for built in compartments for cords, DVDs, VHS tapes, DVD player storage, and more. Inside the cabinet, a custom mount could be created for the plasma TV. Add to this some remote control doors on the cabinet and one could have oneself a pretty Godfather-esque setup.

In conclusion, if you wish to become the talk of the neighborhood with your brand new home theater or home entertainment center, be sure to have the finest centerpiece available with a large, high quality plasma television.

A Guide To Plasma Televisions

One of the newest additions in television technology, Plasma Televisions are the 21st century display devices which are fast becoming a popular choice among television viewers. Plasma televisions have higher resolution and quality performance than other conventional televisions; they guarantee crisp and clear images, and superior quality.

Plasma televisions became a reality after the successful invention of the plasma display panel in 1964, by Donald L. Bitzer and H. Gene Slottow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Embracing a unique technology, Plasma televisions produce pictures from a combination of inert gases such as xenon and neon. When the gas is charged using electrodes, the atoms collide with each other and release energy in the form of invisible ultra violet (UV) light. The light is then focused on the three phosphors (red, green, and blue) and a brilliant picture is produced.

Plasma televisions come as Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) with a resolution of 852x480 and the Higher Definition TV (HDTV) featuring a native resolution of 1024x768. Plasma televisions have a high widescreen aspect ratio - the ratio between the width and height of the screen. As plasma televisions do not use any electron beams like the conventional ones, they are immune to the effects of magnetic fields. They offer a wider viewing angle and accurate image reproduction. Plasma televisions are slim and space-saving and can even be hung on a wall. Moreover, most of the plasma televisions come with a flat screen which eliminates edge distortion.

Plasma televisions can be used in meeting rooms, corporate offices, and network control rooms. They are ideal choices for home-theater enthusiasts. On account of quality performance in ambient light, plasma televisions are widely opted for teleconferencing.

A countless number of retail and online stores specialize in plasma television sale. Due to their inherent merits, plasma televisions are becoming the most demanded alternative to the standard CRT and projection televisions.

Top 3 Tips For Buying An LCD TV

I want a larger screen and so do you. There is absolutely no reason for this wanting except for the feeling of power that a large screen gives you. I have no idea why it is, but we all seem to want a larger screen for our TVs these days. The question is, how to get a good deal on an LCD TV without paying a fortune. Let’s give you our top 3 tips on buying an LCD TV.

1)Don’t buy a used one if you don’t have to. The funny thing about these TVs is that their prices drop significantly every month and that if you just wait a little longer, the price you’ll pay for a new TV is probably not going to be too far off from the price that you are going to pay for a used one. A little patience might actually save you some dollars here.

2)Compare features, not just prices. One of our favorite places to go to compare prices on LCD Tvs is ConsumerReports.org. Consumer Reports was rating different items way before the internet even become popular. Remember buying your first real car? I do. And I went straight to Consumer Reports to find out that the Honda Accord was the car to buy (and still is according to CR). Shopping for a high end LCD Tv shouldn’t be any different than shopping for a new car. All the resources are at your disposal, so give it a try. I’m sure you can find some gems of information at CR regarding your LCD Tv purchase.

3)HD is coming, don’t miss out. High definition television has allegedly been “right around the corner” for years. Well, that time may finally have arrived. Some LCD Tvs come HD ready and some do not. Make sure your new LCD TV supports HD so that when it is finally popularized, you can watch the programs utilizing this latest technology.

And by the way, why would someone want to buy an LCD TV over a “Plasma”. And what is a plasma? Are they different than LCDs? Basically yes. The big difference is that they use different technologies to deliver a picture. Both have pros and cons. However, both deliver a large screen experience to the user.

DVR reviews

DVRs are now being used in areas like surveillance and entertainment. DVRs have managed to get a good response from the market and the future will see DVRs being employed in new areas like weather forecasting and ship to shore communication.

DVRs have carved a niche in the field of satellite television. HDDVRs with all their features have managed to attract the attention of many a couch potatoes. The futuristic feel of the product and the control that it has given to the viewer has added a new dimension to TV viewing and some are already comparing it with the transformation brought on after the onset of color television in the last century. However, it may take a while before this technology becomes the norm and broadcasters start airing programs that are tailor made or customized to HDDVR sets. With DVR technology, the reception of signals at the viewer end is digital and now the onus has shifted to the broadcaster to provide signals of matching quality to further enhance viewing pleasure.

As far as surveillance does, DVRs are fast replacing the conventional VCRs. Extensive research and development work is going on in many corporations and labs to develop better DVR devices to suit varied market requirements. The remote location monitoring option by which offices could be monitored from anywhere in the world, has caught the attention of the market. There is also extensive demand for the embedded DVRs because of their independence and ease of operation. Many banks, security firms, commercial organizations have already switched over to this technology and are enjoying the benefits.

In the transport sector, the technology is now fast catching up as many cargo firms are now depending on DVRs to obtain real time information on the movement and safety of their goods. Along with the GPS system, this technology has given companies another avenue to monitor cargo movement. The demand for DVR in this sector is expected to increase in the years to come.

With the use of DVRs in multiple sectors, the stage is now set for development of customized DVRs. These will take a different path of evolution from their predecessors and may even be developed into a completely different technology.

How To Choose A Digital Camera

Digital cameras have exploded in popularity in recent years. The convenience that they have brought to the market with the ability to review your pictures instantly and correct any imperfections by retaking the picture and the ability to store, edit, and email them from your own personal computer has fueled this growth.

It is now no longer a matter of if you need a digital camera, but rather which one do I choose?

First decide how you are going to use the camera. If simplicity is your goal, a simple point and shoot digital camera will do. If you wan the flexibility to be able to grow with the camera as you gain experience get a point and shoot that offers manual controls, this way you will have the best of both worlds – infinite options for creativity and the ease of an automatic mode.

The next item on your agenda should be megapixels. To keep it simple, the more megapixels the better the picture will be. So, how many megapixels do you need?
If all you are doing is printing or emailing photos, a 3 or 4 megapixel digital camera will work. If you are going to use it for more professional work and enlarging photos, go with one with 5 or 6 megapixels.

If you want uncompromising clarity go with a 7 megapixel or above. Just remember the higher the megapixels the higher the price!

How much zoom do you need? You have two types of zoom with digital cameras, digital and optical. Optical is the more important because it brings your object closer without losing quality. The digital zoom will bring the object in closer, but you sacrifice the quality of the picture. If all you do is take everyday pics a 1x to 4x optical zoom will do. If you take pics like sporting events, get one with a 5x optical zoom or higher. For really intense professional work choose a 10x or better optical zoom.

Digital cameras have evolved now to the point where you can get a great fully featured camera that will fit comfortably in your shirt pocket so don’t think you have to get a large one to get good quality. If you are using it for more professional use with large optical zoom and such expect to have to buy a larger one however.

Impress your Friends with your new Home Theater System

So you’re in the market for a new home theater system? Why not? Everyone you know either has one or wants one. Are you sick of having to go to your buddy’s place to watch the game on the big screen? Have you been playing that SNES system, circa 1995, since, well, 1995? Is your prized movie collection in laserdisc format? Maybe it is time to invest in a new home theater.

The first thing you ought to do is establish a budget. You could spend thousands of dollars on your new system, so give some consideration to what you are able to spend. There’s no point spending your rent money on a TV, if you will not have an apartment to watch it in.

Once you have decided what you are able to spend, draft a wish list of components you would like. Big screen TV or LCD projector? X-Box or Playstation? What about surround sound? 5:1? 6:1? 7:1? There are so many options, and the possibilities are seemingly endless. Keep it simple. Do you really need a 51 inch HDTV, for your 10x10 living room?

Either way, your system will definitely need certain components to qualify as a home theater. For the sake of being modest, why not consider getting started with a home-theater-in-a-box? These packages generally come with a surround sound receiver, a set of speakers, and a DVD/CD player. These systems are relatively inexpensive, and will leave you with enough cash flow to buy that new Sopranos box set! Capice?

A lot of people like to include gaming systems in their home theater, especially if they are able to play on a big screen. There’s nothing like playing Halo in life size! If you do most of your gaming on your computer, most decent video cards will have a video line out that you can use to connect to your TV or projector. Otherwise, you can incorporate any other console system into your home theater.

Your sound system will likely consist of a number of speakers (left, right, and center front, surround left and right, and a subwoofer). This is the standard surround system. The wattage of the amplifier you are using will greatly affect the sound being produced, so be sure to use one with enough power to effectively supply your system.

As I said, the options are seemingly endless for home theater systems. Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer, and do not buy anything that does not have a 30-day money back guarantee……just in case you have to return it to pay your rent!

Home Theater Construction That Really Sings

When creating a home theater, it can help to heed some sound advice: Working with the right materials can do a lot to improve the overall acoustic integrity of the system.

For example, medium density fiberboard (MDF) is widely used in the manufacture of furniture, cabinets, door parts, mouldings, millwork and laminate flooring. MDF is a composite panel product consisting of recycled wood fibers combined with a synthetic bonding system and joined together under heat and pressure. Additives may be introduced during manufacturing to impart additional characteristics.

The surface of MDF is flat, smooth, uniform, dense and free of knots and grain patterns, all of which make finishing operations easier and more consistent, especially for demanding uses such as direct printing and thin laminates. The homogeneous density profile of MDF allows intricate and precise machining and finishing for high end architectural products.

Hitting The Right Notes

MDF is an extremely versatile building material. As a dense, rigid, acoustically inert product, MDF has no peers when it comes to creating speaker cabinets capable of delivering high-fidelity and high-energy audio. A properly designed MDF speaker cabinet will focus the maximum "acoustic energy" at the listeners, while keeping vibration transition to a minimum. When building a home theater, it's important to use materials that will bring out the system's sound quality.

In some cases, designers have used MDF for wall panels with special fabric coverings to control acoustic reflections in the room. MDF is considered a smart choice for home audiophiles who like higher sound pressure levels. You can really add punch to a sound system with "tactile transducers" under the home theater floor. These are piston-driven devices, connected to the base channel, that can shake the whole room. Such installations are invariably coordinated with double layers of MDF.

The Composite Panel Association brings together 39 North American producers of particleboard, medium density fiberboard and other compatible products.

Four Easy Steps to Buy a Plasma Flat Screen Television

If you’re looking to purchase your first plasma flat screen television, there are 4 simple steps to insure a pleasant shopping experience.

If you’re on a budget and can’t afford to spend $2,000, you should begin your search with the lower priced models in the 37”- 42” range. Conversely, if you can afford more than $2,000 your screen choice is unlimited.

Second, decide the screen size and manufacturer you like. Plasma monitors are measured diagonally across the screen, as are other television sets and monitors. Plasma screens start at 32" and increase in size up to 103". The most typical sizes are: 37", 42", 43", 50", 61", and 63". The best selling plasma televisions are made by Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, and Samsung.

Third, you should consider buying a plasma television from an online e-tailer. Here are some reasons to buy online:

• Convenience. No need to stand on line, or spend time talking to a sales person.

• Price savings. You save money by not having to pay sales taxes and we’re priced below big box retailers.

• Exclusives. They have a wider selection of plasma models to choose from all the major manufacturers.

Fourth, decide where to mount the plasma television. One of the major benefits of plasma TV is the flexibility they afford in mounting and installation options. Here are a few you might consider:

Flat Wall Mounts are the most common mounting option for Plasma TVs for home or business use. This option is the least expensive and allows the plasma monitor to remain closest to the wall, adding less than 2 inches to the depth.

Tilt Wall Mount is used when placing the plasma TV higher than the desired eye level. A tilt wall mount typically allows 15 to 20 of tilt, depending upon the brand.

Conclusion, buying a plasma television can be an exciting experience that will bring thousand of hours of entertainment if you follow these four simple steps.

Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

Calculators have shrunk in size and increased in price as consumers have sought out devices that do much more than simple arithmetic. Texas Instruments has their TI-83 Plus model which helps students with their Physics, Biology, Algebra, and Pre-Calculus classes. We'll examine why this model is so popular with today's classroom students.

Back in the 1970s, the slide rule gave way to calculators in many classrooms across the nation. Texas Instruments led the way as almost every student owned one of their models. Today, Texas Instruments [or, TI] continues to produce calculators and their TI-83 Plus calculator leads the way.

So, what sets this particular model apart from others? Well, it is pocket-sized, comes with 12MB of memory, does tons of math problems including statistical tests, has a complete alphabetical keyboard, and it can run programs to name a few. Still, if you are a Calculus student it doesn't do Calculus. However, you can bring the TI-83 Plus along for standardized tests and college admission exams.

The device runs with 4AAA batteries, so you need to make sure you are fully charged before you start your tests or at least carry spare batteries with you.

The TI-83 is not cheap as you will have to pay about $100. for a new one. Expect to pay a lot more if you purchase one through your university's bookstore; shop online to compare prices too.

The TI-89 may be a better option, especially if Calculus is in your future. Shop and compare and make sure that the model you want provides the calculations you need.

In all, the TI-83 carries on a long tradition of excellence for Texas Instruments. Sharp, Casio, and Canon are chief competitors to T.I., but judging by the TI-83 you will find what you need from the people of Texas Instruments.

Battery Chargers

Many new portable appliances and electronic devices use rechargeable batteries. Cars, boats, and motorcycles are also equipped with rechargeable batteries. How do battery chargers differ for each type of battery? What are the different options for recharging batteries?

Auto and marine and truck batteries are 12 volt batteries. Chargers for 12 volt batteries are much more advanced than traditional versions. Battery chargers such as the Battery Minder charge batteries without overcharging which can ruin a battery. Another very useful tool for auto and marine batteries are jump starters. Many newer models are portable and can jump start up to 30 cars without having to be recharged. A great model is the PowerTank jump start equipped with a florescent light and battery tester. Solar battery chargers are available for a wide range of devices. ICP Solar chargers are great for people on the go.

Cell phones, PDAs, and other small electronic devices use different chargers than auto or marine batteries. Typical small appliance battery chargers are wall or desk mountable. They can charge batteries much quicker than conventional battery chargers. Some even pop out the battery when it is fully charged to avoid the “memory effect” that is common with NICD batteries. ICP Solar chargers are also available for small portable appliances. When charging a cell phone battery, chargers vary greatly by brand and are only compatible with the cell phone manufacturer.

Many types of batteries are rechargeable. However, choosing a battery charger varies for each type of battery. Factors include voltage, type of battery, for example, lithium, NICD or lead acid, all require a different type of battery charger because they use different technologies. How a battery is charged can greatly affect the life of a battery, so it is important to follow procedure for each type of battery for proper charging.

MP3 Batteries

Walkmans and CD players are a thing of the past, thanks to MP3 players. Now music and sound files can travel anywhere on a tiny hand held device. With the advent of MP3 players, the demand for traditional AA batteries has gone down too. Now there is a new contender on the market to keep MP3 players singing.

In order to keep MP3 players running they need a very powerful battery. For most brands, the Lithium-Ion battery is used. It lasts much longer than traditional batteries, and is perfectly designed for playing music or running programs for long periods of time. Lithium batteries are also very lightweight in comparison to their traditional counterparts. These lithium batteries can run up to 18 hours without recharging.

MP3 manufacturers have created several devices to keep any player up and running for users on the move. Many MP3 players have adaptors that allow the user to charge the device with the vehicles AC adapter. Some devices come with an additional battery pack that can be used when the battery life runs out. Other brands come with a wall charger so they can simply be plugged in, while other brands like Compaq offer a portable battery charger that can go anywhere.

There are so many types of MP3 players on the market since their popularity has increased. Battery types vary greatly depending on brand and model of the MP3 player. When shopping for a new replacement MP3 battery, it is important to know all the correct information so you don’t order the wrong battery. Using the wrong battery can completely damage an MP3 player. So whether you have a Dell, Sony, Audiovox, or the most popular iPod, know your product when searching for batteries.

Battery manufacturers are always trying to come up with new ways to make batteries more powerful and last longer. This is important for those who used MP3 players on a daily basis that often get stuck with dead batteries. It is encouraging too, that batteries that are already quite functional are only going to improve.

Silent Fans Do The Work For You

Mold is an inevitable challenge of indoor living. That can be a problem, because exposure can cause allergic reactions, asthma, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing or skin irritation. If you have a mold problem in your home, the only way to control its growth is to control moisture. Here are some things you can do to control mold growth in your home:

• Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.

• Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24 hours to prevent mold growth.

• Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent and dry completely.

• Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (such as windows, piping, exterior walls, roof or floors) by adding insulation.

• Absorbent materials, such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.

• Don't carpet areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, such as around sinks.

• Reduce indoor humidity to less than 60 percent to decrease mold growth. Vent bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside with a ventilation fan.

A humidity-sensing fan is the perfect solution for proper ventilation. Broan's new Ultra Silent Humidity Sensing fans are automatic-once there is a rapid rise in humidity, the fan automatically turns on to exhaust excess moisture and turns off once the job is done. They're also quiet, making less noise than even a quiet refrigerator.

Energy Star-qualified, the fans use 65 percent less energy, on average, than standard models. The humidity-sensing fan uses Sensaire technology to detect a rapid increase in humidity at the ceiling, where it's most prevalent, unlike humidistats, which only detect simple humidity. This feature makes the humidity-sensing fan more effective at protecting a bathroom from mold and mildew.

Now it's easy to control mold and moisture in the home.

The Basics of Plasma Televisions

Are you thinking about investing in a plasma television for your home? Plasma televisions can provide an excellent television viewing experience, and are becoming increasingly popular among those when want to enjoy a high quality home theater experience.

As with most technology purchases, there are advantages and drawbacks associated with investing in this type of television. Before investing in your next television set, it's important to understand the basics of plasma televisions.

Image Quality

One of the primary reasons that plasma televisions are so popular is their high quality image displays. These types of televisions offer very high resolution images with sharp details and true to life color.

Convenient Display

Plasma television sets can easily blend into the design of just about any room. These television sets are tiny when compared with analog units, and can allow you to better utilize the square footage of your home. Instead of taking up a significant amount of floor space, plasma televisions can be hung directly on the wall or placed on a compact stand.

Longevity

Plasma televisions are not the most durable or long lasting television sets available. These types of television sets are difficult, if not impossible to repair. They generally last about seven years with normal usage. However, they are fragile and subject to irreparable damage when being moved from one location to another.

Pricing

Plasma televisions are priced at the mid range of television technology. They are less expensive than LCD television sets, but cost significantly more than analog sets.

The Real Value Of Plasma TVs

You may be surprised at just how tuned in to TV many Americans really are. A recent survey found that not only do half of all Americans want a plasma television, but many of them will go to great lengths to get one. Here's a closer look:

She Said

Forget chocolate, it seems that women are craving their favorite shows in high definition. A third of women said they would give up chocolate for 12 months in exchange for a plasma television.

He Said

Forty percent of men surveyed said they would endure a 48-hour "chick flick" marathon, if it meant they would be rewarded with a plasma television. One-fifth of the men surveyed said they would give up all sports-related activities: watching, playing and reading about their favorite sports and athletic heroes.

So why are plasmas so popular? Experts say the TVs' crisp images, vibrant colors and sleek designs tend to appeal to both men and women. For instance, the Pioneer PureVision plasma television features technologies known as Deep Encased Cell Structure, Crystal Emissive Layer and PureDrive II. They help enhance brightness, create richer, deeper blacks and improve video processing. In short, they create a sharp, bright, accurate picture-something that both genders seem to appreciate.

If you plan to purchase a plasma anytime soon, Pioneer suggests taking the following factors into account:

Size

Forty- to 65-inch plasma displays are usually well-suited for viewing high-definition content in a primary home theater.

Brightness

Brightness should be consistent from different angles. Try to see the TV you are considering in a lighting environment similar to your home.

Sharpness

Lines and edges should be sharp and clean without trails.Ê Make sure the sharpness holds up in dark or fast-moving scenes.

Color

Colors should be true-to-life, not cartoonlike. You should see detail and subtle gradations in the color.

Details

You should be able to see picture details such as blades of grass, pens in shirt pockets and individual faces in a crowd.

Camcorder Battery

Choosing what works for you.

Camcorders have come a long way from the big bulky machines that required an advanced degree to operate them. Now camcorders make you think of a hand held trendy accessory that can easily be brought to any event to capture the moment. As with all handheld appliances, the element that keeps them going is the battery. For every brand of camcorder, there is a specific type of battery and a varying amount of battery life.

For each brand and model of camcorder, there is a specific battery designed for that camcorder by the manufacturer. In order to purchase additional batteries, you must know the make and model number, as brands like Sony have dozens of models of camcorders.

Camcorders typically use NiCD or NiMH batteries. Newer Lithium Ion batteries are on the market for camcorders as well. They are more ideal for camcorders because they must run multiple applications which uses lots of battery power. To accommodate this, traditional NiCD and NiMH batteries can be extremely large and heavy, whereas Li-Ion batteries weigh much less and provide the same amount of power.

Depending on the type of battery, whether it be NiCD, NiMH, or the new Li-Ion battery, the type of camcorder charger needed will be very different. All these batteries use different technologies and therefore charge using different technologies. Many camcorder charger manufactures have helped to overcome this problem by creating universal chargers that charge all types of batteries in one docking station. Another option is rapid chargers, which charge batteries in a fraction of the time it takes traditional chargers. For convenience, some chargers are also equipped with a battery tester to measure the battery and avoid over charging.

Camcorders use lots of battery power, so it is important to consider how it will be used before purchasing a camcorder battery. Remember to take into account weight and frequency of use to get the most for your money.

Plasma and LCD – What’s the Difference?

What will you see when you compare the same show on a plasma screen TV and a LCD TV? That depends mostly on where you watch it.

If you put the two television sets side by side in a room with light, chances are that you will not see a dramatic difference between the two pictures. However, if the light is turned off, the picture on the plasma TV will appear to be clearer and crisper. This sharper contrast and brightness in the plasma TV is due to more light being blocked from the background. On an LCD TV, some of the background lighting is not effectively blocked, which makes it look like weakened background color.

Another factor in the picture you see when comparing a plasma screen TV with an LCD TV is the angle at which you are viewing it. If you are head on, watching from the center of a room, you will have a more accurate comparison. When you view from an angle, plasma TVs tend to have the edge on the LCD models. The LCD models lose quality in brightness and contrast as you move away from their center. Plasma TVs, then, are great if you plan to put them in a room with a lot of seating options from various angles so more people can see a good picture.

When it comes down to making a decision between choosing a plasma screen TV or an LCD screen TV, the truth is that it is simply a matter of personal taste. Both kinds of television sets have the same approximate life span, about 25 years if the television is watched six hours a day or less. Both even pull the same amount of electricity on which to operate. At one time, this was not the case. In the beginning days of plasma TVs, those models required more power to run them. Advanced technology has evened out that issue over the past few years.

The big advantage that the plasma screen TVs have over the LCD TVs is size. Most plasma TVs are two to five inches thick. The LCD TVs are much thicker. Because of the flat, thin nature of the plasma television, the owner of a plasma TV can choose to wall mount the television. It becomes more of a piece of art than a mere entertainment accessory!

Two-way radio batteries

Many fields use two-way radios for communication. It rural or remote areas, two way radios are still essential where there are not cell phone signals. There are some 2 way radios that have a range of up to ten miles. Two way radios depend on batteries to keep running. When shopping for two-way radio batteries, they can vary greatly by brand.

There are many different brands of two way radios. Some popular brands are Motorola, Uniden, Cobra, just to name a few. Many of these manufacturers have dozens of models of two way radios. Two way radios are not just walkie talkies any more. They have many features that allow them to serve as emergency rescue devices. Equipped with things like NOAA weather stations, flash light, hands-free voice activated capabilities, the new two way radios are far more powerful than any cordless home phone.

Two way radios typically use NiMH batteries or NiCad batteries. These types of batteries are best for cordless communication devices like two way radios and cordless phones. They are long lasting and respond well to short boosts in power. Some two way radios continue to use traditional AA Alkaline batteries, though these have much less capacity that NiCad or NiMH. A newer battery on the market is the Lithium Ion battery, which has much more capacity and charges much faster.

Two way radios come with a cradle that charges the batteries when engaged. It can be a double cradle for both two way radios, or a single cradle for each that can be used when the radios are apart. Chargers are also very brand specific, so if a replacement charger is needed, it is important to select the proper make and model.

Two way radios are essential for many in any outdoor fields. Their capabilities make them an extremely powerful communication tool. Buying quality two-way radio batteries is an essential method to stay in touch. Being stuck with dead batteries 8 miles out is never a good thing. Stock up and stay connected.

AC Adaptors

When you are flying to another country or continent, you might require an ac adapter if you bring electrical items. If you do not have one, the electrical items you may bring will be useless. Why you might ask? Well because every country doesn’t have the same electrical outlet. It would be a good idea to know what kind of plug a country uses before going there to visit.

In North, South America, Japan and some of the Caribbean use an ungrounded plug that has two flat prongs or a grounded plug that has an additional third prong. Most of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and other parts of the Caribbean use a plug with rounded prongs. In order to use a device from another country in an electric outlet you will need an ac adapter.

There are many kinds of power adapters that you might need. Most electrical adapters come in a both grounded and ungrounded versions but some countries only use three pronged plugs so the only travel adapter listed will be a grounded adapter. Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and China use a slanted two prong adapter. Great Britain, Ireland, Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore use a three prong plug, with two flat prongs in line and one perpendicular. Some places in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central America and the Caribbean use a grounded adapter. Italy uses electrical outlet with 3 rounded in-line prongs.

So you can always find out what kind of plugs is used when you’re traveling to another country. Or an easier way could be to have an ac adapter when your traveling it will save you much grief and money. If you’ve invested in an ac adapter you wouldn’t have to keep buying new electrical products when you travel to another country.

The Capacity of Laptop Batteries Explained

Laptop batteries are rated by, Voltage (V) and Milliamp-hours (mAh). Voltage
is the rate at which energy is drawn from the battery and Milliamp-hours Represents the capacity of the battery. The Milliamp-hour rating Corresponds to the run time of the battery. A battery with a high Milliamp-hour rating has a relatively longer run time than a battery with a Low Milliamp-hour rating.

Batteries with different Milliamp-hours can be used on the same laptop provided the voltage rating is the same. The voltage rating has to match that of the original battery or as recommended by the computer manual. Using a battery with a different voltage setting can seriously damage the laptop. The power ratings of most compatible/replacment batteries are higher than the original manufacturers' batteries. This will not damage your laptop, in fact, it simply means that these batteries in many cases last longer than original manufacturers' batteries. Ask the experts like
PowerUp on compatible replacement laptop batteries.

The run time of a laptop battery will vary on individual notebook computers, based on the applications being used (i.e. high graphics, games), the number of times something is saved or retrieved from the hard drive and/or CD Rom drive, the memory of notebook, and chemistry and capacity of the battery. A ‘realistic’ average run-time for a battery is 1.5 to 3 hours. Using devices like a wireless adapter on the laptop also drains the battery considerably.

The life of a battery under normal use is around 500 to 900 charge-discharge cycles. This is about one and a half to three years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to fail, the running time of the battery begins to decline.

How to Find the Best Home Theater System

Everyone wants a home theater system, but when confronted with the choices in buying one, you can get overwhelmed. No matter where you look for a home theater system, there are varying types of systems and varying prices also. So you are able to get the best theater system your money can buy here are a few tips.

When you are first shopping for a system, they all look the same, or relatively the same, on the outside. But how they work can be a completely different story. To make sure that the one you are looking at works well, try it out! You may not think the store will let you do this, but you would be surprised at the length a company will go to have your business.

If you are looking at using your home theater system as a gaming tool too, then you should take your gaming system to the store to test it out. If it isn't compatible with your gaming system, it is better to know sooner rather than later.

So you have found the best home theater system for your needs and use. The next step is to compare prices. The biggest and most common mistake made when buying a home theater system is finding the perfect system, but not comparing prices before you buy. There is nothing more frustrating then buying a system at one store, then seeing it for less money, sometimes hundreds of dollars, at another store just down the street.

Don't forget the internet when comparing prices either. Many stores offer discounts through the internet, and sometimes the companies that make the systems will have cheaper prices than the wholesaler. Make sure that you keep in mind shipping prices, but you could save money even with the shipping costs. The internet might just be the way to go.

Three Cell Phone Companies

The first cell phone I remembered ever seen was the one that Sack Morris in Save by the Bell used to have. It was big and it looked more like a portable phone than a cell phone, and it was not very common for people to have unless you were a business man. However now a days everybody has a cell phone, and the smaller they are, the better. With the invention of new technology cell phones have improved and now you can even take pictures with your cell phone, and even better, make videos. Also you can navigate the internet, write an email, and even take it to another country and still be able to use it. Furthermore they have the possibility to send messages instead of calling people which makes it more affordable and easier to use. Today cell phones are so popular that some people rather have cell phones than have regular phones. Also information and pictures taken in your cell phone can be transfer into a computer which is great to connect people since these pictures and information can be send or simply be save for a longer time in a computer.

What's more impressive than cell phones themselves is the amount of companies that sell cell phone services, which is good because it creates competition, which creates lower prices. Here in Venezuela there are three major companies: Digitel, Movilnet, and Movistar, which is good because one have the opportunity to compare the different rates and sales that these companies have to offer. My family have Movistar because we have a service ¨Habla Pegado¨ that allows you to talk to any other Movistar as long as you want, which is excellent and cheaper in a family of a large number of people like ours: two parents, and seven children.

Odyssey Batteries and the Odyssey Optimizer

Odyssey batteries are high performance batteries for anyone interested in any type of high speed motorized sporting. One brand has surpassed the rest in offering high performance batteries, and that is Odyssey.

Odyssey, which claims to be the Extreme Battery, offers batteries for motorcycles, ATVs, utility vehicles, and personal watercraft such as jet skis. Odyssey batteries are military grade and can withstand the abuse that comes from high speed motorized sports. While most batteries will succumb to vibration and mechanical abuse, Odyssey batteries do not.

Odyssey batteries are the original rechargeable battery containing lead acid. However, these batteries are sealed so they avoid spilling which is a hazard in traditional “spillable” lead-acid batteries. They are also referred to as sealed-MF, or maintenance free, because they are shipped fully charged and do not require activation.

Odyssey has developed its own tester and charger to ensure the proper maintenance of their batteries. Known as the Odyssey Optimizer, this charger and tester is one of the best of the market for sealed lead-acid batteries. The type of charger required depends greatly on how the motorized sporting equipment is used. If the battery must be discharged rapidly and then recharged rapidly, this requires a different charger than if the battery must stay at a high state of charge with multiple starts and stops.

Odyssey batteries are the way to for anyone involved in motorized sporting. These types of batteries hold all the advantages over their rechargeable counterparts. Though the price can vary greatly, it is well worth the investment to have a reliable and powerful battery.

Razor Batteries

What’s available, and how to keep it new

Electric razors are a wonderful invention, but can be quite costly. It is important to know how to keep you razor in good condition so it will last a long time and will save you the expense of purchasing a new one. The right type of razor battery and the right type of charger can help to maintain an electric razor and save money in the long run.

There are several familiar brands that make some great electric razors. Braun, Remington, and Norelco all have very good electric razors. Norelco’s new razors have a jet clean and charge system, an all in one set up that helps maintain the quality of the razor. Remington razors have titanium, self-sharpening blades that help maintain the best performance. The Braun razors also boast a cleaning system, and a special design that captures more hair than ever.

Razors typically use an Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH battery. NiMH is a newer technology in portable appliance batteries that holds twice the capacity of its traditional counterpart. NiMH batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. They are also more environmentally friendly because they do not contain heavy metals. The batteries are usually not that expensive, around $10 to $20, which is much better than purchasing a new razor for $100 or more.

Since the NiMH batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, charging is not as much of an issue. With most razors, you simply just place it on the charger after use and do not think about it again.

Protect your investment, take care of your razor, and buy the best razor batteries. It will help your razor maintain performance for years to come.
